1996年，Tool乐队在推出了极端出色的专辑《Aenima》以后，由于专辑所取得的巨大成功，所以造成了乐队和以前的唱片公司Freeworld的长期的诉讼纠纷。但是在这场诉讼结束两年之后，乐队的成员在收入分配和音乐创作上变得更加谨慎，乐队成员内部虽然也就经济问题达成协议，但是这也直接导致了乐队的分裂。主唱Maynard James Keenan和吉他手Billy Howerdel谋划另组一支新乐队，他们还拉拢乐队中的贝斯手Paz Lenchantin加入了新乐队。 Keenan和Howerdel的相识是在1992年Tool乐队为老牌摇滚乐队Fishbone做开场演出的时候，当时Howerdel还在Fishbone乐队，两人在这次演出中很成功的配合了几首歌，之后他们就走在了一起，但是直到离开Tool乐队之后两人才开始了真正的合作。当他们俩人和贝斯手Paz Lenchantin形成乐队现有…
